Foundry Gears, Black and White Print 10X14 inches
While on a road trip through central Baja California I explored an old abandoned foundry complex. I was struck by the various forms and textures in the rusted and discarded pieces of machinery and steel girders. Cantilevered trusses formed a complex geometry of shapes that I began to visualize in contrasting patterns of light and dark images. As I considered the photographic possibilities in the shapes and forms I came across this large set of factory gears that had once served to give motion to the factory works. The light reflected from the bright parts of the gears contrasted nicely with the deeper shadows within. I imagined the gears moving a huge caldron of molten metal ready to be cast into iron ingots. I call the photo Foundry Gears.
