I have traveled extensively through the Southwest, photographing and exploring the scenic wonders of the region.  Grand red rock canyons, wind and rain eroded monolithic mesas and ancient native American cliff side dwellings.  Canyon de Chelly encompasses all of these elements in long narrow valley that is part of the Navajo reservation.  Normally one can enter the valley only by hiring a local tour guide.  However a road running along the crest of the valley offers views down into the valley revealing the cliffs and canyons and red rock formations.  Near the end of this road one can access a trail that leads down about three miles to the valley floor.  A short hike across a stream takes you to the White House Ruins set high up in a cleft in the cliff.  When the light is right the setting is majestic and dramatic.  Alternating bands of light and dark red rock plunge down from the cliff top towards the cliff dwelling ruins below.  I was fortunate to be there when the light was right and I was able to make this image of the White House cliff ruins.  I was standing very near the same spot that Ansel Adams stood when he made his famous photo of the White House reprising an earlier photo of the White House made by Timothy O’Sullivan sometime in the 1870s.
